Matt Chem reaffirms protection of the environment and human health

Under the slogan "A Clean Sea for Future Generations", Matt Chem, a company specialized in cleaning, maintenance and renovation products for boats and caravans, announces a new reformulation of its products.

Following the decree of new regulations that inhibit the use of biocides in cleaning products, the company has selected a new formulation using enzymes and bacterias, with the aim of ensuring a high level of human and animal health as well as environmental protection.

Enzymes are proteins found in living organisms which are key elements in the development of life. Products like beer, yogurts or cheese are formulated through these proteins.

The role of enzymes in Matt Chem products is to ensure that organic matter is transformed into smaller, water-soluble deposits resulting in the following key factors:

1. NEUTRAL PH Cleaning

2. Detergency + Environmentally-friendly

3. Sustainable development

4. User safety

In the background, naturally, enzymes and bacteria digest and deteriorate organic matter, fats, limestone and allow unpleasant odors to be controlled.

EDF1 - Electronic Distress Hand Flare

The rescueME EDF1, developed by Ocean Signal, is the Electronic Distress Hand Flare more compact in the world, providing to its users a safe and last visual signalization solution in case of emergency situations.

While a pyrotechnic handflare burns for 60 seconds, the light of the electronic Hand Flare allows a much longer duration that can reach six hours in Economic Mode and two hours in Ultra (intense) Mode with emission of SOS signal.

In case of emergency, the use of a pyrotechnic handflare can be lucky or unlucky, once its burning may not be seen by other vessels, reducing the chances of locating and rescuing. The EDF1 increases this probability once it can be repeatedly used in any of those four modes, guaranteeing a continuous visibility for a long period. This device is safe to store and to use, eliminating any warnings associated to its discard.

Also, it doesn’t need police authorizations for its acquisition or destruction. It is an excellent complement to pyrotechnics with a long-lasting light emission, compact size and rugged design, what makes the rescueMe EDF1 an ideal safety product to include in the drop bag, liferaft or in a backpack.

Features and specifications:

  • Advanced LED Technoloy - Safe Operation
  • 360º good visibility on the azimuth
  • Good visibility for airplanes and helicopters
  • Four operating modes plus SOS signaling
  • Reach up to 7 miles
  • Compact and sturdy design
  • Constant brightness maintained over battery life
  • Easy battery replacement
  • Waterproof: 10 meters deep with + 20ºC

Shipwreck of Rainha Iemanjá vessel located by signal of Beacon

The four crew members of Queen Iemanjá fishing vessel were saved on 31 January by the Portuguese Navy and the Portuguese Air Force, following the sinking of the vessel near the São Miguel coast and after receiving the signal issued by the EPIRB (Radio Beacon).

This signal was received by the Coastal Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) of Ponta Delgada around 2:00 am, near the Ginetes, in S. Miguel island, and the National Maritime Authority lifesaving were activated, the corvette vessel "António Enes" of the Portuguese Navy, the C-295M aircraft and the EH-101 Merlin helicopter of the Portuguese Air Force to the scene of the accident.

The fishermen were rescued already on the rocks by the helicopter and only presented signs of hypothermia, having been sent to the Hospital Divino Espírito Santo. The fishing boat Rainha Iemanjá, however, was already lost.

The Radio Beacon of the vessel was the model SafeSea E100G, of Ocean Signal, with incorporated GPS, and was programmed at Orey Técnica Lisbon Service Station, in the last July 31 of 2015.

The SafeSea E100G Radio Beacon transmits an exact location of the vessel - in 30 seconds - obtained through the built-in GPS. The information is updated every 20 minutes. These transmissions are captured by the GEOSAR and LEOSAR satellites. This model has two major advantages: the immediate location of the vessel in danger and the excellent precision of the emergency positioning.

Sabrina Briana ship wreckage

 5 survivors. Despite of the loss and material damages, it is with satisfaction and pride that this news is received by the professionals of Orey Técnica.

The liferaft which help in this emergency rescue was a RFD Seasava, with capacity for 8 people, manufactured in February 2000 with serie number 4153300400003. It was tested and inspected at our service station in S.Miguel in September 2014 and, although it was a 15 years old raft, it accomplished its role, similar to what had already happened with other portuguese vessels that also had RFD Seasava rafts:

  • André Filipe, Leixões, 27.04.2014, 2 survivors;
  • Forasteiro, Cascais 20.04.2013, 6 survivors;
  • Sameiro, S.Miguel, 31.01.2012, 8 survivors;
  • Virgem do Sameiro, Figueira da Foz, 30.11.2011, 6 survivors;
  • Gigi, Madeira, 17.11.2011, 3 survivors;
  • S.Francisco de Assis, Estreito de Gibraltar, 9.10.2008, 4 survivors.

According to published news at portuguese newspaper Correio dos Açores, "the 11-meter-long Sabrina Briana fishing vessel sank this early Saturday afternoon at eight miles south of the edge of the Ferraria", the newspaper said. Sabrina Briana had just left the port of Ponta Delgada, with five fishermen on board, including the master - all from Lagoa - and headed for the island of Pico, in Azores. The fishermen explained to the Maritime Police that two dead waves fell on the fishing vessel and it began to sink. They had the opportunity to issue an SOS alarm and opened a liferaft. Then they left the boat and drifted.

From the port of Ponta Delgada, the "Senhora da Boa Viagem" lifeguard boat came to help fishermen, and the fishing vessels Amigos Atlântico and Familia Medeiros, which were nearby, were also promptly help the shipwrecked. The five fishermen passed aboard the Friends of the Atlantic vessel and the liferaft was recovered. Throughout the operation were the Command of the Military Zone of the Azores and the Coastal Station of the cooperative Porto de Abrigo.

‘Virgem do Sameiro’ vessel eqquiped with RFD Seasava liferaft

The portuguese vessel ‘Virgem do Sameiro’, wich wrecked at the last 1st December 2011, with 6 fishermen from Caxinas, was equipped with a RFD Seasava liferaft.

After the both shipwrecks of ‘Mar e Pesca’ and ‘Pico Diamante’ vessels in 2010, there are already 26 the fishermen that were rescued in RFD liferafts in the last 2 years. Joining ‘Rainha do Mundo’, ‘Intrujão’ and many other Portuguese vessels, this number exceeds fifty fishermen rescued in the last decade in liferafts that were sold and inspected in the OREY Técnica Service Stations.

This product model is conceived with the same floating structure of RFD Surviva professional liferafts, approved by Portuguese authority IPTM, for local and coastal fishing. It is manufactured in light polyurethane, resistant against corrosion and abrasion, allowing it a great endurance.

The water bags with high capacity and floating anchor offers to this liferaft a great stability, even in very rough sea circumstances.

The retro-reflective bands and tight automatic light provide to this liferaft a high visibility, facilitating the search and rescue process.

The model used by the 6 fishermen o ‘Virgem do Sameiro’ contains specific equipment for inshore fishing (pack E), which has a wide range of products such as knive, oars, first aid Kit, repair kits, flashlight, anti-nausea pills, hand flares, parachuting signal distress, water, among other useful products.

This raft, by its endurance, construction quality, emergency kit and compact size, is the preferred liferaft used in local and coastal fishing, with given proves of its quality when it’s necessary in case of emergency situations.

RFD Seasava rafts are packaged in bags or in really robust containers made with fiberglass, with capacity for 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 people.
